Boa Vista
The north villages and an empty road
Best forA day off the southern resort road
North of Sal Rei the island thins out. João Galego and Fundo das Figueiras are small, dusty and more like Cape Verde than the hotel coast. The roads are sand and dirt. A normal car is the wrong tool after rain, and sometimes before it.
The day
Leave with a full tank and more water than you think. There is not a café every twenty minutes. Walk a village, buy a cold drink if a shop is open, and turn around while you still have daylight.
Santa Monica can be the same day only if you start early and you are not already lost. The island looks flat. Tracks do not always go where the map suggests.
