Mosteiros and the north coast
Best forA full day if you are already on the island for several nights
Mosteiros faces away from São Filipe. The drive around or across is the commitment. The town is lower, greener and closer to a black-sand beach than the capital’s cobbled centre.
Plan the hours
Leave after breakfast, not at noon. The coast road is scenic and slow. Swim only where local people swim. Eat in town. If you are also trying to climb Pico or taste wine in the caldera, this is a different day.
São Filipe remains the easier base for the airport. Mosteiros is for people who have four nights and dislike doing the same waterfront twice.
