Wine inside the caldera
Best forA slow afternoon after you have looked at the cone
Fogo wine grows on lava. The vines in Chã das Caldeiras are low, the soil is black, and the cooperatives pour what they bottled rather than a fantasy of a wine region. It is one of the most specific things you can do in Cape Verde.
How to taste
Reach the caldera in the morning while the road is quiet. Walk the village, then taste. Buy a bottle if you like it; do not expect a long list of vintages. The same afternoon is the wrong time to start the Pico climb. The climb is a separate, early start.
Eruption history is not decoration. Houses here have been rebuilt. Listen when someone tells you which flow took which street.
