Sal
Buracona and the west-coast bays
Best forA morning out of Santa Maria before the wind picks up
Sal’s west coast is lava, not the long pale beach of Santa Maria. Buracona’s Blue Eye is a hole in the rock that lights up when the sun is high. Nearby bays are where boats stop for lemon sharks. Both are short visits. Neither is a place to invent your own cliff jump.
Practical
Go with a licensed boat or a driver who does the circuit. The Blue Eye is best late morning. Shark encounters are from the boat’s rules, not from wading in because a photo looked friendly. Wear shoes on the lava.
Afternoon wind on Sal is the constant. Do this before a kite session, not after, when you are already salted and tired.
