Cidade Velha (Ribeira Grande) is the first European colonial city in the tropics. Go for the fort, the pelourinho, the ruined cathedral. It is not a theme park. Combine with Plateau in Praia the same day.
Getting there
Taxi from Praia. Go early before the heat on the stones. Read a page of history first so the ruins mean something.
