Santiago
Serra Malagueta on a clear morning
Best forA day out of the city with a driver or a rental car
Serra Malagueta is the walk Santiago residents mean when they want air that is not Praia’s. The park sits on the spine of the island. Paths are marked better than most Cape Verdean trails, and the temperature drops enough that you notice.
The day
Leave Praia early. Cloud and rain are normal up here even when the coast is hot. A short waymarked walk is enough if you are not a hiker. Carry a light layer and water. Lunch in Assomada on the way back is the local move.
Tarrafal, further north, is a different day: sea, the old prison, a longer drive. Do not stack both after a morning meeting in Plateau.
