Schools and family life

Public schooling is in Portuguese. Quality varies sharply between Praia, Mindelo and the smaller islands. Families who move from Europe often choose a private bilingual school in Praia or, on Sal, a smaller international programme. That is a lifestyle choice with a fee, not a moral failing of the local system.

Public schools

Cape Verde has invested in classrooms. The language of instruction is Portuguese; Kriolu is what children speak in the yard. A child who arrives at eight with only English or French will spend the first year catching the language, not the curriculum. That can be a gift. It is still a hard year.

Secondary options thin out outside Santiago and São Vicente. A bright teenager on Fogo or Brava may board in Praia, or the family splits: term-time in Portugal or France, holidays on the islands. Plenty of Cape Verdean families already live that pattern. It is logistics, not defeat.

Private and bilingual

Praia has the densest private offer: bilingual programmes, a more European timetable, and fees that look familiar to someone leaving Lisbon or Paris. Places go in the spring for a September start. Visit in person. A glossy PDF does not tell you about the afternoon heat in the classroom or whether the bus actually runs from Palmarejo.

Sal’s international-style options are smaller and more tourist-island: mixed nationalities, English in the corridor, Portuguese in the classroom or the reverse. Boa Vista is thinner. Mindelo has character and music; it is a city a teenager can actually walk.

Little children

Crèches in Palmarejo, Achada Santo António and Santa Maria fill in September. Register early, even if you are “only trying a year”. After-school is beach, football, swimming and cousins — not a packed club timetable. That is either the reason you moved or the reason you will miss Saturdays at home.

Vaccination records from the EU are usually accepted; bring the booklet. The paediatrician at a private clinic is the practical first stop, not the hospital queue.

A working family week

Parents who both work remotely discover that fibre in the house and a school run in a dusty car are the real timetable. Power cuts still happen. A child doing online homework from Europe’s platform needs a charged laptop and a neighbour with a dongle.

There is no perfect island for a family. Santiago has services and heat. São Vicente has culture and a harbour. Sal has the beach and a thinner winter community. Santo Antão has the mountains and a ferry. Visit during term, not during a holiday week, before you sign a year-long rental.

Island notes for families

Praia: most schools, most after-thoughts, most heat. A family that needs specialists starts here.

Mindelo: music, a walkable centre, a ferry to the mountains at the weekend. Teenagers fare better in a city than on a resort strip.

Sal: beach childhood, mixed classrooms, a winter crowd that leaves in April. Fine for primary years if you accept the thinner secondary offer.

Elsewhere: possible, and you will invent the timetable — tutors, a year in Portugal, or a very small class.

Lecture checklist

• Visit in term time, not Carnival week.
• Ask the school about Portuguese support for arrivals.
• Crèche waitlists in spring for September.
• Vaccination booklet in the bag, not “at home”.
• A plan for age 14, not only age 6.

Family life here is outdoor and improvised. That is the point, until it is not — then you want Praia or a ticket.
